Netflix will no longer work on Wii U or Nintendo 3DS from June

The slow death of the Wii U unfortunately continues. In November Nintendo confirmed that they were shutting down Super Mario Maker servers, effective March 31 this year and now they have also confirmed that another great app will no longer run on the system.

As of June 30 this year, it has been confirmed that the official Netflix app will no longer work on either the Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of consoles. Although the app has not been available for download since December 31 last year, it is now official that the service is shut down once and for all on both systems. A page on the official Nintendo website states:

DUALSHOCKERS VIDEO OF THE DAY

“As of December 31, 2020, the Netflix app will no longer be available for new users to download from the Nintendo eShop on the Wii U console or Nintendo 3DS family of systems. During this time, it will be possible for existing users to redownload these apps. Service for existing users will continue until June 30, 2021. Thank you to everyone who has enjoyed Netflix on these platforms over the years.

Although largely forgotten at this point, the Wii U still makes the news from time to time. Earlier this year VBlank Entertainment released their popular title Shakedown: Hawaii on the console and more recently Nintendo accidentally listed the classic N64 Banjo Kazooie for release on the Switch’s predecessor only to later apologize for what they called it a “mistake”.

Anyway this news is a shame for the only person still using Netflix on their Wii U how will they watch the second season of the witcher now? Here’s hoping we get a Netflix app for the Nintendo Switch at some point in the not-too-distant future.
